Laboratory Sample Preparation Planner

Account for startup, transition, steady output and retained material before preparing a research batch.

Optional project tool

Account for the material in your trial

Enter your own measured or estimated volumes in litres. Every volume is required: enter 0 when a loss or inventory does not apply. No equipment operating volume is assumed.

This once-through balance uses one common reference condition, with no direct steam addition, evaporation or recycle. It does not establish a machine minimum operating charge, a thermal recipe, sterility or shelf life.

Your trial quantities
1. Define the trial
2. Available material and circuit inventory

Total product available for this trial. Enter a positive quantity.

Inventory in the selected circuit during operation. This descriptor is not added to the preparation requirement again.

Material still in the named circuit at the end. It cannot exceed circuit hold-up; count vessel or handling losses separately.

3. Account for product used and collected

Product discarded while bringing the system to the trial condition.

Combined product discarded between all planned conditions.

All output collected at steady conditions, including the analytical samples. Enter a positive quantity.

A subset of steady output, not an additional consumption. This positive quantity cannot exceed total steady output.

Separate vessel, transfer or handling loss not already counted above.

4. Keep cleaning water separate

Recorded separately from product consumption. Water or chemical requirements must be confirmed for the cleaning method.

5. Equipment interests

Choose at least one area to discuss. These are functional interests, not separate machine models.

Record the reference condition and the source of your volume estimates. Keep personal or confidential details out of this planning note.

A transparent preparation balance

Required material = startup discard + transition discard + steady output + terminal retained material + other non-overlapping losses. Collected samples are a subset of steady output, so they are not added twice. Circuit hold-up describes inventory and is not added again on top of material retained at the end.

Keep the boundary clear

Use volumes at a common reference condition. Cleaning water is accounted for separately. This simple once-through balance excludes steam addition, evaporation and recycle. It does not establish a machine minimum operating charge, a validated food-treatment schedule, commercial sterility or shelf life.
